Humour: An Important Life Skill !
HUMOUR: AN IMPORTANT LIFE SKILL
Today, I shall be exploring the topic, why is humour an important life skill. The term “humour” essentially means provoking laughter and providing amusement. Humour is man’s greatest blessing. Humour is a form of relaxation to the mind, and is almost equivalent to meditation. Humour, though temporarily, can bring us relief from the sorrows and troubles of everyday life, and has the intrinsic ability to change the mood of a person in an instant. Humour may act as a medicine that cures the soul of stress, anxiety, and disappointment. Humans cannot remain subdued all the time, and it is in moments of suffering that humour acts as a treatment for the ailment called life.
Laughter is like taking a deep breath and restoring normalcy to everything. Humour is perhaps the simplest way to decrease stress. Hence, humour is the best coping tool. Humour helps people to connect immediately. Humour strengthens social bonds, and eases the process of conveying messages effectively. For instance, when people gather to view a movie at the theatre, and the movie is humourous, the audience immediately connect with each other. They laugh at the same time, with each other, and are socially connected through humour though they may not be personally acquainted with each other.
People immediately find humourous people attractive because at the end of the day, life is full of tension and all that people want is to be happy. Being surrounded by jovial people, or being a jovial person, is healthy for the mind and soul, and consequently, for the body. Humourous people have the innate quality to recognise the good in everything and remain optimistic even in dark and difficult times. Without a sense of humour, humans would be as dreary as a desert. Possessing a good sense of humour portrays one as being intelligent, amicable and sociable. Humour, combined with wit, makes a person appear wise. Humour entertains and amuses and de-stresses, and people are always keen to spend time with such people.
Sarcasm is another form of humour, or rather wit, that can be employed to ease tension and gravitate people towards you. Making people laugh is one of the best feelings in the world, and to have a way with words, to be able to play with words, is a greater joy. Having a sense of humour or being surrounded by such people makes life more enjoyable and easier to sail through. A quick wit enables people to sharpen remarks with dry humour, and repartee without hesitation. Hence, humour is not only the key to success in our daily lives but also at work.
The relaxed feeling after a bout of laughter is comparable to the one felt after a good workout. The hormones that give warm and fuzzy feelings are released into the brain. Humour lowers the stress level, helps us to look at stressful situations from a different perspective, and strengthens social interaction. It is good for our immune system, our memory, and makes us happy. Humour relieves us of not only mental tension but also bodily tension and anxieties.
Even in the wake of the global pandemic, when
physical isolation has become the call of the day, it is humour that is helping
people keep sane and remain connected. Humour acts a terminator between the
troubles of the world and the realm of joy beyond that. Humour works wonders
when it comes to overcoming the problems of life, and is a magical potion that
transports you to happiness instantly. Laughter is the best medicine. As the
famous quote goes, “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure”!
